Seychelles officially the Republic of Seychelles is an island country spanning an archipelago of 115 islands in the Indian Ocean, some 1,500 kilometres (932 mi) east of mainland Africa, northeast of the island of Madagascar. Other nearby island countries and territories include Zanzibar to the west, Mauritius, Rodrigues, Agalega and Réunion to the south, and Comoros and Mayotte to the southwest. Seychelles, with an estimated population of 86,525, has the smallest population of any African state. It also has the highest Human Development Index in Africa. Scholars assume that Austronesian seafarers, and later Maldivian and Arab traders were the first to visit the uninhabited Seychelles. Remains of Maldivian mariner presence from the 12th century were found in Silhouette Island.[4] The earliest recorded sighting by Europeans took place in 1502 by the Portuguese Admiral Vasco da Gama, who passed through the Amirantes and named them after himself (islands of the Admiral). A transit point for trade between Africa and Asia, the islands were occasionally used by pirates until the French began to take control starting in 1756 when a Stone of Possession was laid by Captain Nicholas Morphey. The islands were named after Jean Moreau de Séchelles, Louis XV's Minister of Finance. The British contested control over the islands between 1794 and 1810. Jean Baptiste Quéau de Quincy, French administrator of Seychelles during the years of war with the United Kingdom, declined to resist when armed enemy warships arrived. Instead, he successfully negotiated the status of capitulation to Britain which gave the settlers a privileged position of neutrality. Britain eventually assumed full control upon the surrender of Mauritius in 1810, formalised in 1814 at the Treaty of Paris. Seychelles became a crown colony separate from Mauritius in 1903. Elections were held in 1966 and 1970. Independence was granted in 1976 as a republic within the Commonwealth.[7] In 1977, a coup d'état ousted the first president of the republic, James Mancham, who was replaced by France Albert René. The 1979 constitution declared a socialist one-party state, which lasted until 1991. The first draft of a new constitution failed to receive the requisite 60% of voters in 1992, but an amended version was approved in 1993.

The Seychelles is a paradise with deep blue waters teeming with sea life and gorgeous, unspoiled shores. But this island is more than just a pretty face. Here, we present eight fascinating facts about this incredible little republic. The Seychelles was once a pirate hideout, in particular Anse Forbans (Pirate’s Cove) on Mahé and Côte d’Or on Praslin. It is believed that famous pirate Olivier Levasseur hid a treasure worth more than $160,000 that remains unfound. Bird Island is home to the heaviest land tortoise living in the wild, Esmeralda, who tips the scales at 670 pounds. Moyenne Island in Saint Anne Marine National Park is believed to be haunted by a spirit that stands guard over buried treasure. The coco de mer, native to the islands, produces the largest seed in the world. The distinctly shaped nut can weigh up to 33 pounds. Victoria, the capital of the Seychelles, is the smallest in the world and can be easily explored on foot in less than a day. James Bond author Ian Fleming visited the Seychelles in 1958 looking for adventure and inspiration for his then-latest collection of stories, For Your Eyes Only. The Seychelles has some of the rarest endemic birds, including the bare-legged Scops-owl, which is so rare that it was once thought to have become extinct before being rediscovered in 1959. Breadfruit is very popular on the Seychelles and can be eaten in a variety of ways from fried to boiled. Legend has it that anyone who eats it while on the islands will return someday. Seychelles: Country in East Africa The Republic of Seychelles comprises 115 islands occupying a land area of 455 km² and an Exclusive Economic Zone of 1.4 km² in the western Indian Ocean. It represents an archipelago of legendary beauty that extends from between 4 and 10 degrees south of the equator and which lies between 480km and 1,600km from the east coast of Africa. Of these 115 islands, 41 constitute the oldest mid-oceanic granite islands on earth while a further 74 form the low-lying coral atolls and reef islands of the Outer Islands. The granitic islands of the Seychelles archipelago cluster around the main island of Mahé, home to the international airport and the capital, Victoria, and its neighbouring islands of Praslin and La Digue. Together, these Inner Islands form the cultural and economic hub of the nation and contain the majority of Seychelles'’ tourism facilities as well as its most stunning beaches. This section provides comprehensive information about the geography, climate, history, society, government, people, language, religion, culture, cuisine, recipes, arts, architecture, folklore, flora and fauna of Seychelles, and the 6 island groups that, together, make up Seychelles'’ Inner and Outer Islands. The Republic of Seychelles is a cluster of 115 islands in the Indian Ocean, roughly 900 miles off the east coast of Africa. La Digue is the country’s fourth largest island in terms of size, and Grand Anse (Big Cove) is considered one of its most beautiful beaches. With very few cars on the island, most folks in La Digue get around by bicycle. The slow pace appeals to the relatively few tourists who visit La Digue, compared to those who travel to other islands in the Seychelles chain. It’s also home to the endangered paradise flycatcher bird, along with hearty populations of giant tortoise and coconut crab. Local food specialties include palm wine made from fermented coconut, and bat curry, made from, well, we trust you can figure that one out.

Mahé, the largest island of the Seychelles Archipelago, is situated in the Republic of Seychelles in the western Indian Ocean. Mahé, housing a well equipped international airport, destinations that provides you with relaxation and the much-needed break from the monotonous chores of daily life, attracts a good number of visitors all through the year. Surrounded with the calm and quiet neighbouring islands Mahé also serves as the base to access all the neighbouring islands on the ocean, ideal to make your weekend itinerary. Sightseeing, water sports, scuba-diving, fishing, boating and indulging in a helicopter ride to get a birds eye view of the wonderful island are some of the many things you can do in this groovy beaches of Seychelles. Moreover, if you are planning to stay in an international hotel look for the ones that also provide you with tennis and squash courts. The Reef Hotel of the city even offers a nine-hole golf course making sure that you don't miss on anything that your heart desires. Mahé has a comfortable weather with temperature remaining between 26°C to 29°C all through the year. However, during the month of November to February, the island gets a good amount of rain. Due to the position of the island, which is beyond the cyclone belt, you can keep your worries of high storm or thunderstorm aside. Looking at the Southeast trade winds and the Northwest monsoon the best time to visit Mahé would be between March and October. Like most of the other countries, the island of Mahé also has an interesting history. According to the records available, Mahé, the island was discovered in the year 1502 by a navigator who didn't name the islands of Seychelles. Later the Portuguese called them the "Seven Sisters." In 1756, Mahé with the other island of Seychelles became a French colony and the name Séchelles has been given to it. During the 19th century, the English took over it and named it with its present name of Seychelles. The English continued its control over Seychelles from 1903 until 1976. Later the island mass gained Independence and became the Republic of Seychelles. Accommodation in Mahé is not a problem as you can get a number of choices in accommodation starting from international hotels, wonderful resorts to medium-sized hotels with all facilities. The low range guest houses, lodges and chalets also helps you to get an accommodation that would suit your budget yet will give all the facilities required. Camping is however, not allowed.
